What is DeFi? DeFi (short for Decentralized Finance) is a financial ecosystem operating on a blockchain (primarily Ethereum and compatible chains), allowing people to access essential financial services without intermediaries such as banks, stock exchanges, or mainstream financial media companies. The core idea of DeFi: Trustless: You don’t need to trust any institution, just trust the code (smart contracts) and the blockchain.
Permissionless: Anyone can participate, as long as they have a crypto wallet and an internet connection.
Transparency: The entire transaction system and source code are publicly available on the blockchain.
Advantages of DeFi: Much higher performance than traditional banking systems (potentially 5–50% APY depending on the option).
Easy access: No paperwork, no income verification required.
Operates 24/7, globally.Control of assets: “Not your keys, not your money” — you hold it yourself.
Smart contract risks: Code errors → loss of funds (many DeFi hacks have occurred).
Unstable losses (provides strong liquidity).
Volatility: Crypto prices fluctuate wildly.
Payment and liquidation risks.
Legal regulations: Many countries are unclear or tightening regulations. In Concrete, the source code is law, until it ceases to be law. Operational security is what comes next. DeFi claims to eliminate trust. In reality, it doesn’t. It redistributes trust. In fact, every DeFi system contains an element of trust. The issue isn’t whether trust exists, but whether it’s created or hidden behind a decentralized facade.
Depositing funds into a lending market means trusting the collateral, governance, and liquidation. Rollup transactions require trust in the coordinator, the bridges, and a set of validators. All of these are not hidden. But they are abstracted, encapsulated in DAOs and time locks, things that signal decentralization but don’t always offer resilience.
Building a solid foundation stems from a different premise. If trust is inevitable, it needs to be built — clearly and intentionally — with a robust operating mechanism to function when code alone is insufficient. This is a summary of DeFi Concrete.
