Uzbekistan, known as the White Wolves, will take the pitch for the first time in the tournament’s history, coached by a man who lifted the trophy himself: Fabio Cannavaro.
But for the crypto world, the more interesting subplot is happening off the field. Kraken was designated as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the tournament, continuing a pattern where digital asset firms use global sports as a megaphone for mainstream adoption.
A World Cup winner coaching World Cup newcomers
Cannavaro was appointed as Uzbekistan’s head coach in October 2025. The Italian legend captained his country to World Cup glory in 2006, winning the Ballon d’Or the same year. Now he’s tasked with guiding a team of relative unknowns through one of the tournament’s toughest groups.

The squad itself isn’t without talent. Manchester City defender Abdukodir Khusanov headlines the roster, joined by forwards Abbosbek Fayzullaev and Eldor Shomurodov. Cannavaro’s coaching philosophy reportedly focuses on enjoying the experience rather than fixating on specific results.
Uzbekistan qualifying at all is a significant achievement for Asian football. The expanded 48-team format opened doors that were previously bolted shut, and the White Wolves walked through one.
Crypto exchanges and the FIFA sponsorship playbook
Kraken’s role as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the 2026 World Cup was announced around June 9, 2026. The deal follows a well-established playbook. Crypto.com served as a sponsor during the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.
What’s notable is what hasn’t happened. There are no reports of Uzbekistan-specific crypto partnerships, fan tokens, or digital asset launches tied to the national team or Cannavaro. This stands in contrast to the fan token wave that swept through European football clubs in 2021 and 2022, when platforms like Socios issued tokens for clubs like Barcelona, Paris Saint-Germain, and Juventus.
Fan tokens as a category cooled considerably after the broader crypto downturn, and many of those tokens lost significant value from their highs.
