X is no longer hoping you’ll stumble across a fact-check on your own. The platform’s Community Notes system now actively sends correction messages to users who engaged with misleading posts, targeting the people most likely to have already spread the misinformation further.

If you liked, reposted, or commented on a post that later receives a Community Note, X will now ping you directly. The logic is straightforward: passive corrections only work if someone happens to scroll past the flagged post again. Active notifications follow the misinformation’s trail back to the people who amplified it.

How the notification system works

Community Notes is X’s crowdsourced fact-checking program. It evolved from an earlier initiative called Birdwatch and became a core feature following Elon Musk’s acquisition of the company. The system lets approved contributors propose and rate contextual notes on posts they believe are misleading.

Contributors must meet eligibility criteria including account age requirements and phone verification. Once enough contributors with diverse viewpoints agree that a note is helpful, it gets attached to the original post for all to see.

Previously, a Community Note would appear on a post, and that was essentially it. Users who had already engaged with the misleading content would likely never see the correction. Now the platform reaches out to those users directly.

Research conducted between 2023 and 2025 supports the underlying premise. Studies found that Community Notes effectively reduce engagement with misleading content when applied promptly. The faster a note appears, the more it dampens the spread. Proactive notifications extend that principle by chasing down engagement that already happened.

A feature arriving amid declining contributor engagement

By mid-2025, Community Notes experienced a significant decline in the volume of submissions, suggesting that contributor engagement was dropping. A notification system is only as good as the corrections it delivers. If fewer contributors are writing and rating notes, the pipeline of corrections slows down, and the notification feature has less material to work with.

X isn’t alone in this approach. Meta launched a comparable user alert system for its own Community Notes program on September 10, 2025, covering Facebook, Instagram, and Threads.

What this means for the platform’s credibility and investors

Proactive corrections represent an attempt to signal that X takes content integrity seriously without resorting to top-down editorial moderation, something Musk has vocally opposed. Community Notes is the compromise: decentralized, contributor-driven, and transparent in its methodology. Adding notifications makes the system more assertive without changing its crowdsourced DNA.

The declining submission volume is the number to watch. If X can’t reverse that trend, the notification feature becomes a well-designed delivery mechanism with nothing to deliver. Meta’s parallel launch creates competitive pressure that might help.
