What is Web3? Why It Sounds Revolutionary… But Feels Broken

Last week, I tried sending ₹600 worth of crypto to a friend.

The transaction fee? ₹380.

At that moment, I had a very simple question:

If this is the future of the internet… why does it feel worse than what we already have?

That question is the perfect place to start understanding Web3.

So, What Is Web3 Actually?

Let’s ignore all the buzzwords for a second.

Web3 is basically this idea:

“What if apps didn’t depend on a central company?”

Right now, most apps you use- Instagram, YouTube, Google — are controlled by companies.
They store your data, make the rules, and can remove you anytime.

Web3 tries to change that by using something called a blockchain.

Instead of one company controlling things, the system runs on a network of computers.

Sounds fair, right?

But here’s where things get interesting.

The Promise vs The Reality

The promise:

The reality (today):

That ₹380 fee I paid? That’s called a “gas fee.”

And it’s one of the biggest reasons normal people don’t use Web3.

Where Blockchain Comes In (Without Making It Complicated)

Think of blockchain like a public notebook.

Every time something happens, it gets written down:

And once it’s written, no one can erase it.

That’s powerful.

But it also means:
👉 Every action costs money
👉 Every action takes time

So while it’s secure… it’s not always practical.

A Real Example (No Hype)

Let’s say you buy a digital artwork.

In a normal app:
The platform owns everything. If it shuts down, your purchase might disappear.

In Web3:
Your ownership is recorded on the blockchain.

So even if the app disappears, the record still exists.

That’s one area where Web3 actually makes sense.

But Let’s Be Honest

Most Web3 apps today don’t feel better than Web2 apps.

They feel:

So why is everyone still talking about it?

Because the idea is powerful — even if the execution isn’t there yet.

Why This Still Matters

Even if Web3 doesn’t fully replace Web2, it’s already influencing:

And more importantly:

Companies are hiring people who understand this space.

Not experts. Just people who get how it works.

What’s Coming Next

Questioning something most people don’t:

👉 Is Web2 actually that bad?
👉 And what does Web3 get completely wrong?

Because if you understand both sides, you’re already ahead of 90% of people in this space.
