US forces move toward Iran despite diplomatic rhetoric

Political scientist Robert Pape says U.S. forces are moving toward Iran, contradicting diplomatic rhetoric from Washington. The market on US forces entering Iran by April 30 is at 100.0% YES.

Despite a nominal ceasefire reached earlier this month, Pape’s analysis points to continued military buildup as a signal that U.S. ground operations could be imminent. The April 30 market sits at 100.0% YES, with no movement away from full certainty. The December 31 market also holds at 100.0% YES, meaning traders expect sustained military engagement well beyond the near term.

Traders have priced in imminent ground operations given the absence of credible diplomatic off-ramps. The current ceasefire is seen as fragile, with military preparedness on both sides remaining high. Pape’s comments point to a disconnect between official statements and on-the-ground realities, suggesting the ceasefire is more theoretical than operational.

At 100¢, the market is priced for certainty, leaving no room for contrarian bets. A reversal would require concrete de-escalation steps or a significant diplomatic breakthrough, neither of which appears forthcoming.

Watch for Pentagon briefings, particularly from Secretary Hegseth and CENTCOM. Any shift in operational language or troop movements could move these markets off their current ceiling.
