What I’m witnessing right now doesn’t seem like a typical cycle. Infrastructure stress is what it feels like.
The fundamental tasks of global finance, such as pricing risk, allocating capital, and absorbing shocks, are still being carried out, but the system is under increased pressure. The acceleration of artificial intelligence, the growth of capital markets, and the digitization of financial infrastructure itself are all simultaneously coming together.
On its own, each of these forces would be important. When combined, they compress time, which is more destabilizing.
Decisions that traditionally unfurled over years now unravel in months. It now takes weeks to make adjustments that used to take quarters. Additionally, organizations that were formed for a slower tempo are being compelled to function in a rhythm that was never intended for them.
However, speed is not the deeper change I keep going back to. It’s access.
