OpenAI has officially launched the OpenAI Deployment Company, a new enterprise-focused division designed to place engineers directly inside client organizations to integrate AI into their daily operations. The venture launched with over $4B in funding from a consortium of 19 global firms, including TPG, Bain Capital, and McKinsey.

From model maker to embedded operator

The new division will deploy what are called forward deployed engineers, or FDEs. These are engineers who physically embed within client organizations to integrate AI models and optimize workflows.

To staff up quickly, OpenAI acquired AI consulting firm Tomoro, which brings roughly 150 engineers into the fold for immediate client deployment. The goal is to reach 2,000 firms.

Denise Dresser, OpenAI’s Chief Revenue Officer, emphasized that AI is increasingly becoming capable of performing meaningful work within organizations.

The $14B bet on enterprise lock-in

The valuation of the deployment arm is estimated at $14B, with OpenAI retaining majority ownership.

McKinsey’s involvement is particularly telling, given that the consulting giant has its own AI practice. Partnering with OpenAI rather than competing against it suggests even the old guard recognizes which direction the wind is blowing.

OpenAI isn’t alone in this approach. Anthropic has also been deploying engineers to embed AI within large companies and lock in long-term revenue.

What this means for investors and the broader market

The healthcare sector appears to be one early target for these deployments, which makes sense given the industry’s combination of massive budgets, complex data, and regulatory barriers that reward hands-on implementation over self-serve tooling.

The Tomoro acquisition also signals that OpenAI may continue to acquire smaller AI services firms to accelerate its embedded footprint, which could reshape the competitive landscape for AI implementation companies across every vertical.
