Professor Yong Zheng’s lab at Illinois Institute of Technology is now using Theta EdgeCloud to support research in personalization, recommender systems, and human-centric AI. Illinois Tech becomes the 33rd university in Theta’s academic network, joining institutions including Stanford University, Imperial College London, the University of Hong Kong, and Peking University.

Professor Zheng leads the Center for Decision Making and Optimization at Illinois Tech and directs the university’s PhD program in Information Technology and Management. His lab’s focus sits at a productive intersection in modern AI research, building intelligent systems that are more adaptive and transparent, and that actually work in real-world environments rather than just performing well on benchmarks. The work spans personalization engines, recommender systems, and machine learning approaches centered on how people interact with and benefit from AI.

AI Research on Theta EdgeCloud

Research in personalization and recommender systems tends to require a lot of iteration. You’re constantly experimenting with different model architectures, testing across diverse datasets, and fine-tuning systems to behave reliably across varied user contexts. That kind of workflow gets expensive and slow when compute is rationed or shared clusters are oversubscribed.

Experiments get scaled back, hypotheses get shelved, and researchers end up spending time working around infrastructure constraints rather than on the research itself. It’s a cost that doesn’t show up anywhere obvious, but it shapes what gets attempted and what quietly gets abandoned.

Through Theta EdgeCloud, Professor Zheng’s lab can access GPU infrastructure and on-demand AI model APIs across a hybrid network that combines enterprise-grade NVIDIA H100 and A100 GPUs with community-run nodes and AWS infrastructure. The platform is designed to handle the full range of AI research workflows, from lightweight prototyping to more compute-intensive training runs, without requiring long-term commitments or large upfront allocations.

Thirty-Three and Counting

Illinois Tech’s arrival reflects a pattern that’s been consistent across Theta’s academic collaborations. Research labs working on computationally demanding AI problems need infrastructure that can flex with their workload, not fixed contracts sized for average usage. That’s been the draw for labs at KAIST, Yonsei University, Seoul National University, NTU Singapore, University of Oregon, and others already running research on EdgeCloud.

“We are pleased to leverage Theta EdgeCloud to support our research in personalization, recommender systems, and human-centric AI,” said Professor Yong Zheng. “Access to GPU infrastructure and AI services, including on-demand APIs to access a variety of AI models, will help our lab further explore intelligent systems that are more adaptive, transparent, and impactful in real-world applications.”

“Professor Yong Zheng’s lab is doing important work at the intersection of AI, personalization, and user-centered intelligent systems,” said Mitch Liu, CEO of Theta Labs. “We’re proud to support the lab with Theta EdgeCloud and look forward to enabling its next phase of research with scalable compute across GPU, LLM, and AI services.”
