How I Became GitHub Actions (GH-200) Certified in One Week With Minimal Hands-On Practice

Disclaimer: My experience taking this exam was quite specific. I don’t recommend attempting it without sufficient hands-on practice. I didn’t encounter any exam questions that matched those circulating on the internet. As for me, the base of all questions is official documentation: https://docs.github.com/en/actions

In my current role, I don’t write GitHub Actions very often, as most of my work is focused on engineering team lead responsibilities. However, when I started building CI/CD pipelines for my personal projects, I began to think it might be an interesting challenge to try taking this exam. With a background in several programming languages, including some fairly complex ones, I initially assumed that theoretical knowledge would be enough, even though people around me advised getting more hands-on practice before attempting it. So this became a kind of personal challenge: is it possible to pass the exam without extensive practical experience?

Jumping ahead: yes, it’s possible, the result turned out to be good enough:

So, I decided to share my personal recommendations, which I hope will be helpful for you.

Recommendations

Familiarize yourself with the exam topics:

Practice — you really do need hands-on practice.
Many questions include YAML configuration snippets, and you’ll need to choose the correct one out of 3–4 options.

Don’t expect to have a lot of time for each question.
Your English should be strong enough to catch subtle nuances in the wording. If you get multiple-choice questions, start by eliminating the clearly incorrect answers, then focus on the remaining ones.

Try simulators — the one I recommend is:

The main advantage of this resource is that it shows the difficulty level of each question and provides links to the related documentation. This helps you fill in knowledge gaps and learn things you may not have encountered before.

Work with the official documentation:
https://docs.github.com/en/actions
Most of the exam questions are based on it. When you discover something unfamiliar in the docs, try it out in code or at least make sure you remember the key details.

Good luck on your certification journey!
