“How do I handle this?” You ask your senior again, only to be met with a heavy sigh and a blunt: “Can’t you try thinking for yourself for once?”

While your colleagues breeze through new tasks, you’re stuck, paralyzed because you don’t know the “right” answer. Do you find yourself sighing on the train ride home, wondering, “Why am I the only one who can’t seem to learn this job?”

Please, stop relying on “Textbook Learning.”

I used to be exactly like you — a chronic “Information Leecher.” I was slow to learn, couldn’t keep up with my peers’ pace, and was so desperate for peace of mind that I clung to anyone who promised a “correct answer.” I would dump vague questions like “How should I summarize this?” onto my boss and spend my nights scrolling through superficial “work hacks” online.

I even fell for flashy “success stories” on social media, spending way too much money on empty information products because I thought, “If I just follow this exactly, I’ll succeed too.” I was in a state of total mental paralysis — shamefully avoiding the hard work of thinking for myself.

But then, I realized a brutal truth. The difference between those who get results and those who don’t isn’t talent.

It is a single difference in attitude: “Do you try to build your own answer, or do you wait for someone to hand it to you?” Here are the three mindset shifts that helped me graduate from “drifting through life” and finally stand on my own two feet.

1. Kill the “Leech Mindset” and Take the Steering Wheel

Asking “What should I do?” is the ultimate mark of someone destined to lose in a competitive world. The moment you delegate the “correct answer” to someone else, you’ve already lost. You cannot get unique results by simply tracing someone else’s success.

True growth only exists in the process of defining your own risks, testing your own theories, and building your own “logic.” Don’t be seduced by sweet words that stroke your ego. Have the courage to doubt, and the resolve to think.

2. Trash the “Textbook” and Seek Gritty, Practical Knowledge

If you could win just by following the textbook, nobody would struggle. Polished, organized knowledge found in free online articles or general business books is often useless in the messy, unpredictable reality of the front lines.

The only power that actually changes your life is the gritty, “Practical/Empirical Knowledge” earned through your own failures. It takes time. You have to collect samples and keep testing them. This is the only way to build real, unshakeable confidence.

3. Protect the Asset of “Time” and Decide “What Not to Do.”

Time is the only asset given equally to everyone. The first step of self-investment is being conscious of how you use — or efficiently “save” — that time. Rushing for an easy answer out of anxiety is, in fact, the ultimate waste of time.

Real self-investment isn’t about buying expensive courses; it’s about stabilizing your internal foundation. It’s about choosing a few high-quality books and reading them until they are part of you. Most importantly, it’s about deciding what you will not do. Creating simple rules — like “I won’t start something if I don’t have a clear exit strategy” or “I won’t get involved if the logic is vague” — will save you from life’s most fatal mistakes.

Action Templates to Reclaim Your Autonomy Tomorrow

Use these three templates to start changing your approach immediately.

Template 1: The “Anti-Leech” Self-Reflection Sheet. Before asking for the answer, organize your own thoughts.

Template 2: Converting “Textbook Knowledge” into Practice. Turn “knowing” into “using.”

Template 3: The “Not-To-Do” List: A rule to protect your time.

Changing your life starts with graduating from the habit of waiting for someone else’s answer. You have to take responsibility for your own thoughts and your own time.

You aren’t incapable. You were just so anxious about being “wrong” that you leaned on others too much.

Starting today, stop looking for answers outside yourself. The moment you resolve to build “your own answer” through failure and testing, your life will move forward with incredible power.
