Amazon spent $75 billion backing the two companies most likely to destroy each other. That is not a contradiction. It is the smartest move in the history of the AI industry.
This morning, Amazon announced it is investing up to $25 billion in Anthropic.
Two months ago, Amazon announced it was investing up to $50 billion in OpenAI.
Amazon is now running the same playbook with both of the world’s top AI labs. Two months after investing $50 billion in OpenAI and striking a $100 billion cloud deal, Amazon announced a similar arrangement with its original AI partner Anthropic: up to $25 billion in new investment and more than $100 billion in cloud commitments over 10 years.
Let that sink in slowly.
Amazon is the primary financial backer of both Anthropic and OpenAI. The two most direct competitors in the AI industry. The two companies racing to take each other’s customers, hire each other’s engineers, and outperform each other on every benchmark that matters.
Amazon is funding both of them. Simultaneously.
