Referees at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will have cameras strapped to their temples, giving TV audiences a live, first-person view of the pitch. Every single match at the tournament will feature the technology, following formal approval from the International Football Association Board (IFAB).

For crypto, the more interesting signal is happening off the pitch. Kraken has locked in a deal as the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the 2026 World Cup, putting a digital asset brand in front of an estimated six billion viewers.

What the ref sees, you see

Small cameras mounted near each referee’s temples will stream a live perspective of the action to broadcast feeds. FIFA tested the technology during the 2025 Club World Cup and came away satisfied enough to greenlight it for the main event. The cameras were refined based on feedback from that trial run.

Each stadium at the 2026 World Cup will feature 16 optical tracking cameras, AI-powered 3D player avatars, and semi-automated offside technology. The total broadcast setup will include over 45 cameras per match. For context, a typical Premier League broadcast uses around 20 to 30 cameras.

Semi-automated offside technology, which debuted at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, uses limb-tracking data to generate near-instant offside decisions. The 2026 version builds on that foundation with AI-generated player avatars that can reconstruct plays in three dimensions for broadcast replays.

Kraken’s six-billion-viewer play

On June 9–10, 2026, Kraken was named the Official Crypto Exchange Supporter of the tournament, launching activations tied to the World Cup Countdown Concert series. The partnership is focused on fan engagement rather than blockchain integration into match officiating or ticketing.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar drew an estimated 5 billion viewers across the tournament. FIFA projects the 2026 edition, co-hosted by the US, Canada, and Mexico with an expanded 48-team format, will reach approximately six billion.

Rather than plastering its name on a stadium, Kraken is tying itself to specific fan-facing activations around the tournament. The concert series integration suggests a strategy built around cultural moments rather than permanent branding infrastructure.

What this means for the crypto market

FIFA signing Kraken as an official supporter signals that governing bodies are once again comfortable associating with crypto brands following the retrenchment that followed FTX’s collapse in 2022. Coinbase has its NBA deal. Crypto.com has its UFC and Formula 1 partnerships. Kraken now has the World Cup, which in terms of raw global viewership dwarfs all of those properties combined.

Kraken is a private company, so there is no public financial data to scrutinize. But the deal signals confidence in both the exchange’s financial position and its long-term growth strategy at a time when several competitors are either cutting costs or pivoting toward institutional services.
